The Level I - WZ Seminar on Investigative Interviewing Techniques is designed for organizations that desire to use a non-confrontational approach to resolve cases and obtain actionable intelligence. Seminar attendees will learn how to conduct interviews that lead to obtaining information from all parties involved while minimizing liability and maintaining the morale of the organization.

Seminar attendees will learn the importance of rapport in investigative interviews and how to apply these tools in difficult conversations. Instruction includes a comprehensive overview of a variety of non-confrontational interviewing techniques to obtain actionable information from witnesses, suspects, and victims.

This program incorporates proven successful techniques in the field to provide attendees with practical, research-based concepts to tackle any investigation. In addition, the multiple strategies taught offer the seminar participant a wide flexibility of approaches permitting them to alter strategies depending on the level of evidence, subject considerations, and type of interview.

Ken Cyzen, CFI


Ken Cyzen, CFI, is an instructor with Wicklander-Zulawski & Associates, Inc. (WZ). Ken is a retired Lieutenant of the Kane Country Sheriff’s Office, where he served for over 27 years. He gained 17 years of supervisory experience in patrol, drug and gang investigations, civil process, and the Office of Professional Standards. Ken also held the position of Team Leader and Commander of the Crisis Intervention Team (CRT).

During his tenure with the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, Ken was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Award (1994 and 2002), Leadership Award (2013 and 2018), Courage Award (2015), and Unit Citation Award (2017).

His educational achievements include a bachelor’s degree in Sociology with an emphasis on Criminology from Northern Illinois University and a Graduate Certificate in Service Management from Benedictine University. Ken obtained a master’s degree in criminal justice with a focus on Homeland Security from St. Joseph’s University and is currently a Doctoral Candidate for Doctoral Studies in Criminal Psychology at the University of Arizona Global.

In addition to his role at WZ, Ken is an Adjunct Professor at Elgin Community College in Elgin, IL, and Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, IL, where he conducts live and virtual classroom teachings. Ken has also worked as an Instructor Coordinator and Program Director for the Criminal Justice Program at Elgin Community College coordinating educational and instruction efforts with other professors, as well as a liaison with the Dean and Associate Deans to maintain the college’s administrative directives to make improvements in strategic educational approaches to learning.
