Gang Investigation “Triple I”

The WZ Seminar on Gang Investigation “Triple I” was developed to increase the knowledge base and enhance the skills of law enforcement professionals in dealing with criminal street gangs. Utilizing the WZ Non-Confrontational approach, this course combines a comprehensive overview of gangs and gang activity, with successful interview and interrogation tactics and strategies.

Gang Investigation – Identify, Interview and Interrogate, also known as Gang Investigation “Triple I”, is designed for the detective, patrol officer and special agent. This 3-day course provides instruction in gang identification and investigation, and focuses on the skills necessary to conduct field interviews with victims, witnesses, informants and suspects. Backed by the latest research in behavior, psychology and law, WZ’s Gang Investigation “Triple I” includes a valuable segment that explains the mind-set of a gang member and identifies investigative strategies that have proven to be successful in developing cases for criminal prosecution. This dynamic course addresses the link between gang activity and terrorism, details current and future trends, and offers tips on dealing with violent crimes, search techniques, and handling informants

Topics covered in the seminar include:

  • DEFINITIONS - A review is provided of gangology, gang structure and hierarchy, the criminal mindset of street gang members, and distinguishing between gang and non-gang groups.
  • HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE AND OVERVIEW- The historical development of America’s gang problem is presented, including the emergence of the super gangs and today’s mega gangs:  MS 13, Latin Kings, Gangster Disciples, Vice Lords, Crips, and Bloods.
  • TERRORISM - The link of gang activity to terrorism is discussed as well as current and future trends, including the effect that illegal immigration has on gang activity nationwide.
  • DEVELOPING AND HANDLING INFORMANTS - Learn how to improve the management of informants in constructing successful gang-related or gang-involved criminal cases.
  • INTERPRETATION OF VERBAL AND PHYSICAL BEHAVIOR - Develop a common model of how the truthful and untruthful look, talk and act during interviews and interrogations
  • REDUCING RESISTANCE - Learn how to reduce the resistance of a victim, witness or suspect and encourage cooperation.
  • INTERVIEWING INFORMANTS, VICTIMS AND WITNESSES - Find out how to enhance the subject’s ability to recall more details.
  • INTERROGATING THE SUSPECT - Acquire techniques to interpret and evaluate behavior and ask the questions that result in obtaining admissions and securing confessions.

The instructor, John J. Guzman, CFI© served with the Chicago Police Department for 23 years. As a Gang Crime Specialist, Mr. Guzman investigated gang-related homicides, drive-by shootings, narcotics trafficking and intimidation cases. In 1998, he wrote the Chicago Police Gang Reference Book that has been distributed nationally and internationally to law enforcement agencies. Mr. Guzman is an expert witness and lecturer on gang crime and is currently a lieutenant with the New Mexico Mounted Patrol.
